Warmest August nights on record
August 2012 was another hot and dry month, similar to that of July but with even warmer nights. In fact, the mean monthly minimum temperature of 25.1°C was 1.4°C above average and was the warmest on record for August. Meanwhile, the mean monthly maximum temperature of 32.7°C was 1.1°C above average
The mean monthly temperature of 28.9° was 1.2°C above average but was by no means the hottest August on record. The hottest August since 1987 was that of 1999 with a mean temperature of 29.5°C. The coolest was in 2005 with a mean temperature of 26.0°C.
The hottest day in August 2012 was on the 8th with a maximum of 38.9°C. The hottest August day ever recorded was of 43.0°C on 10th August 1999. The lowest night-time temperature in August 2012 was of 23.3°C on the last day of the month. The temperature dropped to a chilly 18.0°C on 23rd August 19927 the coolest August night on record.
No rain was recorded in August 2012 as was expected. However, a couple of locations got a few drops of rain towards the end of the month.
The west was the most frequent wind direction with an average wind speed at Zebbug Malta of 5.7km/h. The strongest gust was of 48.1km/h recorded on the 13th at Zebbug from a southwesterly direction.
