Second hottest June on record

June 2012 was hotter and drier than average with no rainfall at all. The mean monthly maximum temperature of 30.0°C was 1.5°C above average while the mean monthly minimum temperature of 21.5°C was 1.1°C above average. The mean monthly temperature was 25.8°C and was 1.4°C above average. This also means that June 2012 was the second hottest June on record together with 1997 which also had a mean temperature of 25.8°C. The warmest June since 1987 was that of 2003 with a mean temperature of 26.5°C and the coolest was in 1992 with a mean temperature of 22.8°C.

The warmest day in June 2012 was on the 20th with a maximum of 34.2°C. The warmest June day ever recorded was on 25th June 2007 with a maximum temperature of 40.1°C. The coolest night in June 2012 was on the 2nd with a minimum temperature of 17.3°C. The coolest June night on record was that of 3rd June 2007 with a low of 14.8°C.

June 2012 was also drier than usual as no rain fell throughout the month. The total mean monthly rainfall total for June is 5.2mm. Lightning was observed on the 5th.

The most frequent wind direction was from the West with an average wind speed at Zebbug Malta of 7.1km/h. The strongest gust recorded on the 12th reached 53.7km/h at 12:53pm at Zebbug from a SW direction as a frontal system was moving across Italy. A stronger gust of 72.2km/h was recorded at the Mellieha Weather Station on the same day.

The mean monthly sea-level pressure was 1014.8hPa, with the highest of 1020.0hPa occurring on the 15th and the lowest of 1009.6hPa occurring on the 12th.
