SEVERE THUNDERSTORM – 9th September 2009

A squall line crossing the Maltese Islands spawned a number of funnel clouds and at least one waterspout at around 6.30pm local time. The sounding on the left taken at around 8pm local time clearly shows wind shear. Rainfall amounts were not particularly high, except in Gozo with 24-hour rainfall amounts of 13.8mm and 12.2mm at Xaghra and Gharb respectively. Warning was issued.
