SEVERE THUNDERSTORM – 15th January 2013

A squall line moving in from the SW at around 1pm brought along a severe thunderstorm wind severe wind gusts and damaging hail which was at least 3cm in diameter (confirmed) mainly in central Malta, especially the localities of Mġarr, Naxxar, Mosta, Għargħur and Burmarrad. There were also unconfirmed reports of larger hail. Some cars and solar heaters were damaged, window panes shattered and crops destroyed. Streets in various localities were carpeted in white, notably in Mosta, Mgarr, Naxxar and Burmarrad. Highest wind gusts were 96.5km/h in Mellieha, Burmarrad 86.9km/h, Nadur 85.6km/h, Naxxar 72.4km/h and Attard 72.4km/h.
